Wire broke off- sent food everywhere

bestbaker 12/1/2019

love my mixer until now- one wire snapped at the base like some cheap Chinese knock off. Now 1/2 the reviews for these replacement mention oxidation or black residue which is impossible if it is really stainless steel. What is going on with KitchenAid quality?

Grey/ black is coming off!!

Amyky917 10/17/2019

I love my kitchenaid stand mixer k45ssob!! However the wire whip that comes with the mixer is terrible!! After a few washes, the top part which attaches to the mixer turns grey and when you touch it, the grey/ black colour transfers to your hand!! I really don't think it's safe to use

Leaves grey/black residue on hands and food

shayes 10/17/2019

Only used this whisk and other attachments that came with my mixer a few times and they are leaving this awful grey coating on my fingers and in my food. I have only hand washed my attachments and maybe used like 2-3 times.... for the price I would expect better. Love the mixer but the attachments are awful!

Wire Whip

Foodlove 10/12/2019

I'm so glad that you brought back the better quality wire whip and its stainless steel at the hub. I too was so disappointed with the last replacement part that I had with all the gray substance coming off on my hands. I've had my stand up mixer for 35 years and always loved it. Please don't cheapen your quality. I'm able to put in dishwasher also and no problems.

Wears down easily - disappointing and unsafe

nicole26 10/11/2019

We got the KitchenAid Stand Mixer a few years ago, and I love it. Now, the wire whip is starting to dissolve at the base and a terrible dark gray residue washes off. I can't get it all off, it just keeps coming. This is completely unsafe for use in food, and a huge disappointment that the higher quality stainless steel whisk doesn't come with the mixer. Do not buy this one.

I will never use this attachment

s2bjstone 7/21/2019

I just bought the "Passion Red 100 Year Limited Edition Queen of Hearts 5 Quart Tilt-Head Stand Mixer." Unfortunately, the mixer came with what I believe is this exact attachment. I have never used the attachment, but when I rub my fingers on the wire portion of the whip/whisk they turn black/grey. I am led to believe that no portion of this is stainless steel. If it turns my fingers black/grey, what will it do when it comes into contact with food? I will never use the wire whip/whisk that came with my machine.

TWhitfield 3/11/2019

I am beyond thrilled with my KitchenAid mixer that is a gorgeous light blue called Aqua Sky. The mixer exceeded my expectations in many ways. Excited about the many accessories that are offered. Looking forward to passing it down as an heirloom to my daughter.

Dont buy this - Aluminum hub is a non-starter

B Careful 2/10/2019

Put this in the dishwasher by mistake, it came out oxidized. Not sure why Kitchen aid who "owns" the stand mixer market place would use aluminum in the attachments. The incremental cost of just supplying stainless steel is so insignificant to the purchasers of these products it just doesn't make any sense. I will toss the beater into the trash and have to buy the stainless one. The stainless steel hub version of this beater is what you should be getting instead. DONT BUY THIS ONE

Been wanting a Kitchenaid mixer for years and finally splurged on one for my birthday. It is so easy to operate and helped me accomplish in minutes what used to take much longer. Cleanup was a breeze! I can't wait to see what all I can do with it. Wish I would have bought one years ago!!!

Not safe for food...coating oxidized into food

Raffie 1/14/2019

I have a tilt model kitchenaid mixer. The wire whisk/whip has oxidized even though I have been careful with washing by hand. I do NOT use whisk because of what it leaches into food. I would suggest kitchenaid to include the best quality accessories in their counter top appliances as we use these products for our families

As long as you remember that it does not belong in the dishwasher and should be hand washed only. It works great and you get no residue. Dishwashers take off the finish.

Easily ruined

Lazlo84 11/21/2018

I love my mixer and use it several times a week. My whisk needs to be reshaped everytime I wash it. The wires have all shifted so that they don't line up anymore. I'm not going to pay $25+ for a new one, so I guess I'm stuck with this method. Buyer Beware.

Horrible, Horrible Part!

Idaila 11/19/2018

I've had my mixer (which I absolutely love, btw), for about 3 years. I used the whip once and it tarnished when I washed it, leaving black marks all over my hands and anything else it touched. I have NOT used this since because I don't want to risk the residue getting into what ever I'm mixing.

BLACK RESIDUE

upset customer 11/16/2018

I rarely use my kitchen aid mixer 6 wire whip but when I do, I clean the attachment and dry it by hand. I noticed it was turning my food black. When I called kitchen aid they said to clean it in soapy water and bar keepers friend and dry it immediatly. I did as instructed but it didn't fix the problem. I called back and they just asked me if I wanted to purchase new attachments. I thought kitchen aid was a quality brand that backed it's products. However, It sounds like this is a common problem and doesn't seem to be getting resolved!

Ugh so disappointing

Xap nugget 10/31/2018

Wedding registry gift with my stand up mixer, love the mixer, but why on earth isn't this dishwasher safe? A whisk is not an easy item to clean with a sponge. It's a bummer they even bother to sell this. Not to mention, why it is so difficult to find the stainless steel dishwasher safe version (model no. KSM5THWWSS) for sale? For crying out loud, I love my Kitchen Aid appliances but there's no good reason this isn't sold dishwasher safe.

I found the real Stainless Steel Version

DT82 10/31/2018

Took me a while to find, but this is the part number you want - KSM5THWWSS Stainless steel wires AND HUB - dishwasher safe. Heavy SS Hub. Not sure why Kitchen Aid would make and would sell this K45WW with Aluminum hub part that is inferior. Also not sure why it was so difficult to find this part number.

Wire Whip broke after 2 years- not under warranty

Carrie S 3/16/2018

I love my kitchen aide mixer. I also have had no issues with the Wire Whip, which i use quite often, until one of the spokes broke :( I never had a problem w/ residual or flaking of the metal because i would hand wash immediately after every use. But unfortunately there is nothing you can do with a broken wire. The warranty is only good for a year so i guess i'll have to replace on my own. Disappointed in that. Use it for baking all the time.

Works great if you read the cleaning instructions!

Dayneech57 2/23/2018

Many reviewers have complained of gray residue or flaking when they washed this attachment in the dishwasher. The instructions clearly state that you should NOT wash the attachments or bowl in the dishwasher! The gray in egg whites happens if you whip them too long--which can happen with the excellent speed at which a Kitchenaid stand mixer can go! Use a stabilizer (cream of tartar), check frequently to see if the whites are whipped enough without over-whipping--and you won't have the problem! I've been baking for over 50 years, and this is the best stand mixer with a whisk I've ever used.

The black residue

Nancygr 1/26/2018

I have had a couple of Kitchensaid mixers or the last 20 plus years. The uncoated attachments, like the whisk and beater, cannot be washed in the dishwasher and will, even with hand-washing, eventually leave a black/ gray residue on everything they touch. I was told by the Kitchenaid rep that some people prefer the unfinished accessories. Not me-I don't like residue in my food.

FANTASTIC!! If egg whites become gray = overbeaten

stay 1/8/2018

There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG WITH THIS WHIP!!! Julia Child references the greyness result in her book "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" regarding egg whites and other baking batters containing eggs that include the whites. GREY RESULT = over beaten!!!!! Which, considering the speed of the mixer is EXTREMELY EASY TO DO!!! I suggest to all that are feeling that this attachment is to blame for their baking disappointments to try the following before you put Kitchenaid and, MOST IMPORTANTLY - YOURSELF through a lot of headache for absolutely no reason. Those reviewers who've gotten replacements will experience the same exact outcome. 1.) When beating egg whites in a stand mixer (especially if your recipe calls for hand whisking) YOU MUST add a pinch of Cream of Tartar - a powdered spice sold everywhere - to stabilize the egg whites prior to mixing!!!! 2.) Due to the lightning-fast speed of the mixture YOU MUST STOP IT FREQUENTLY to check their consistency!!! If you do not, the whites will become grey in color and grainy, - reference Julia Child. She explains this in GREAT DETAIL in her PHENOMENAL BOOK, Mastering the Art of French Cooking. She devotes an entire chapter to eggs and another to equipment and the most engenius part is that she explains in GREAT AND GRAPHIC detail what happens if you underbeat, overbeat, don't add a stabilizer and another EXTREMELY IMPORTANT aspect - when to add the sugar or salt WHICH - BELIEVE IT OR NOT - IS ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL, detailing the undesirable results that will happen if you do not add these ingredients at precisely the right time. What I have discovered about baking, compared to regular cooking, IT IS AN EXTREMELY PRECISE ENDEAVOR. EACH AND EVERY PROBLEM LISTED HERE IN THE BAD REVIEWS IS ADDRESSED ABSOLUTELY as a problem/undesirable outcome of not being PRECISE - hardly the fault of the person attempting the creation as 99.9% of the recipes out there DO NOT WARN YOU ABOUT THIS STUFF. 3.) Go out and get yourself the aforementioned book by Julia Child. I have been cooking my whole life (I'm now 49) and reading this book has taught me SO MANY THINGS I didn't know myself. The book is a MASTERPIECE and is unlike any other book - it is a TEACHING BOOK - NOT JUST A COLLECTION of recipes. I am not a publisher, book seller and have no interest other than my sincere interest in helping others. I bought my stand mixer because although I considered myself a great cook, I had little experience baking, was told of the precision necessity and was a little nervous. NO NEED IF YOU BUY THIS BOOK. I am a Customer Service Manager and if I were in charge of the Kitchen Aid call center, I'd have a few copies of this book handy for my reps. EVERY SINGLE EXAMPLE listed here is written in the book. THESE WERE NOT APPLIANCE OR ATTACHMENT FAILURES - the failures listed here were preventable if the persons were following a recipe that FAILED THEM!!! Every last one!! LADIES, ARM YOURSELVES WITH JULIA'S BOOK, She revised it when the stand mixer came out and she listed EVERY SINGLE FAILURE she had IN AMAZING DETAIL while attempting & revising the recipes in it. YOU'LL NEVER HAVE THE PROBLEMS LISTED HERE AGAIN!!!

Not for me!

moon439 1/3/2018

Used this whisk only twice, washed by hand put back on Mixer for storage. When I went to make Christmas dinner, I was making whipped cream, I went to remove it and my hand turned black. I found this very disturbing and threw away the whipped cream, thinking the residue had gotten into the cream. This time I soaked it, then washed it in dishwasher and it came out black and icky. Totally disappointed that I cannot use this, and won't use it again. Is there another brand or type of whisk for my KSM150?

HORRIBLE black residue on fingers..

JanetE 12/30/2017

Based upon the other negative reviews I've read I must have, in years past, put my original wire whip in the dishwasher as I took it out to use it this month and the gray/black residue was all over my fingers. I ordered a new one and when it arrived I found that even IT (never used) was smearing my fingers and a damp paper towel with gray/black matter. So. What do I do now? Do I keep the new one that has already started smearing or return it and use my hand mixer when I need to whip egg whites??? It seems ridiculous that I can't use my high end Kitchenaid Stand Mixer because of their inability (or lack of interest) in getting this wire whip right for ALL of us!!!

Yes, this metal oxidizes! Yuck!

wkndcook 12/5/2017

Much like other stories, stated my holiday baking today and found my dough littered with gray residue. KitchenAid has already agreed to send me out a new coated part fir replacement (thankfully!), but that doesn't quite make up for the time and organic ingredients that I'm losing... ugh. KitchenAid - I don't even understand how one could continue to use this, or why you are still selling it??

Gray smudgy residue

Joy-Joy 11/6/2017

I really love my KitchenAid mixer and I'm always careful not to put my attachments in the dishwasher. I pulled out my whip to begin my fall holiday baking season only to find that the base of it is coated with some gray residue that smudges off on my fingers. What is going on with this product???? This attachment costs too much money to look this way after only one year. This whip has been stored in the bag covering my mixer along with my other attachments. Because of this residue I'm afraid to use it for my baking this year.

Not Stainless Steel

Poisoned 11/5/2017

Exactly what hundreds of people have claimed about this 6-wire whip and the inferior finish that has been applied. This is not a completely stainless steel model that KitchenAid claims it is. The shiny metal plating that was indeed on this product out of the box is now completely gone after a few washes, resulting in a gray powder that flakes off into the mixer. What kind of inferior metal is this? Not recommended as a standard utensil attachment for any kitchen. I want a full refund immediately!

Very disappointed

Kat21 10/9/2017

I bought the Artisan plus other attachments. Many in my family have the same product. My wire whip bent when mixing a large amount of cookie dough. Now it hits the side of the bowl. I never put it in the dishwasher as it says not to so don't have any other problem. When you are making 100's of muffins and cookies at a time, it is really annoying with it hitting the bowl. Everything else works fine but this seems to be not very well made.

STOP don't place this in dishwasher.

9/5/2017

We all need a wire whip right? To bad this one isn't made of quality Stainless steel. You must hand wash this attachment right after use and NEVER place in dishwasher! Haha, learned this the hard way. Now it is useless due to a powdery substance on the surface (dishwasher takes the finish off). When one pays over $500.00 for an appliance one is not expecting this. Inferior parts to a once sterling reputation. BTW, mixer is great please Kitchen Aid fix this issue and provide a quality replacement...free would be nice!

Great addition to any kitchen

8/31/2017

We bought this as the 5th piece in our total kitchen reno project. All the appliances we purchased are kitchenaid. I am so happy we bought this beverage center over the wine fridge we were originally going to buy. It's way more than a wine fridge. The dual zone cooling makes it more like an entertainers dream. I recently used it to store appetizer platters I made well in advance for a party. It was able to accommodate my large platters and free up much needed space in my refrigerator. It cools all my wines and champagnes to perfecton as well. I love this and have recommended it to all my friends.

Corroded: Leaves Black Smears

5/17/2017

Like other reviewer's, my Tilt-Head 6-Wire Whip corroded and the metal piece that attaches to the mixer is covered with a fine, black dust/film that comes off on my hands and sponges. It washes right off, but comes back again because the coating that protects the finish is gone. I cannot remember putting it in the dishwasher, but the customer service rep let me know that this can happen if you let it sit in water too long. The only remedy seems to be hand washing it immediately after use, but now I'm afraid to even use dish soap on the new one I had to buy. I wish Kitchenaid would correct this problem and use different materials, but it appears that this is one thing they just don't care to fix. COME ON, KITCHENAID! FIX THIS!

I can't believe I have to change a wire whip. The reason I bought this brand because I thought it is durable, a good investment since I love to cook and bake. I am very disappointed when I notice mu wire whip broke.

Corrodes in the dishwasher

4/21/2017

Corrodes in the dishwasher and leaves dark gray smears on your hands, dishtowels, and in your food. Find a stainless steel version if you can, and let me know what it is.

Wire Whisk Hits SIdes of Bowl and Eventually Breaks

3/24/2017

I won a gray stand mixer Model KSM5. I have had problems with the whisk from the start. I have avoided using the whisk because of the problems. I know it is inserted correctly. It always hits the sides for the bowl making a tapping sound and scraping it. One of the prongs snapped off during my second batch of whip cream. I am very frustrated with this. I will be looking for another maker's mixer. It is too expensive to keep replacing the whisk!!!

Wire Whip made of aluminum and stainless steel will corrode

2/20/2017

The wire whip that came with my beautiful new tilt head grape colored mixer is made of an aluminum body with stainless steel wires. Haven't your engineers every heard of galvanic corrosion? The aluminum will oxidize if you put this in contact with any conductive solution: Lemon juice, dishwasher soap, dish washing detergent, vinegar. Bad engineering! The oxidation forms an icky black powder that covers everything and gets in the food in the mixer if it gets wet. Eventually the wires will come out of the body as the corrosion continues. I tried coating mine with clear nail polish, but then it wouldn't fit on the head anymore. Make it all stainless.

Black residue everywhere - a mess!

2/3/2017

The top portion of my wire whisk has just left black residue all over my hands, in my frosting and on my towel. It's a mess. Evidently someone (guest, babysitter) put my whisk into the dishwasher unbeknownst to me. I cannot tell you how annoyed I am. I have used a kitchenaid stand mixer for years - my mother's (purchased probably 35-40 years ago) has never had this problem and her whisk has always been dishwasher friendly. Why in the world in this day and age any company would manufacture a product that could not be put in the dishwasher is beyond me. Other stand mixers that I know of do not have this issue. This should certainly have been stainless steel or some other non-oxidizing metal. Is there an alternate whisk available that I can use that doesn't have this issue? In looking at the reviews for this piece, I see that I am far from the only person who had a problem.

Wire Whip Attachment Leaves a lot to be desired

12/14/2016

I am with ALL of the others who have had issues with this attachment. I can see that the breaking prongs is an issue for a lot of people and I HAVE sent an email to Corporate with my discontent about this accessory. I'm on my 4th replacement of this part and the cost has doubled since the first replacement. Very disappointed in this part and when I go to purchase a new mixer in another year, I'll go with another manufacturer and possibly just spend more on a commercial version as I'm adding to my cost every 6 months with this mixer anyway. Wake up KitchenAid...your customers are not happy.

Black Residue

12/7/2016

I am on this website for the same reason as all the other commenters. I put my wisk into the machine and it turned black and started rubbing off a thick black residue. I figured it was a reaction to the detergent and my fault for not hand-washing it. So, I tossed it and came here to buy a new one. But, now I see that everyone has the same problem regardless of how they wash it. What am I supposed to do now?

broken wire

8/24/2016

I don't know what is the lifespan of this whisk attachment. I have had it for a couple of years now, but just now, the wire on the whisk just snapped off. two of them to be exact. It also rubbed off some kind of black substace. I am looking for a replacement but seeing the reviews, i am honestly discouraged.

Review feedback

7/21/2016

Same issue with the residue, but it would be SO MUCH MORE HELPFUL if corporate feedback would reply with more than just a thanks and please email us. This does absolutely nothing to help the rest of us who have the same issue, are considering buying, asking about a newer model/improved model, etc.
